Insulation properties of silicone

Hits: 1095 img

Since the second half of the 19th century, ceramics and glass have been the only insulation materials suitable for high-voltage transmission lines. In the 1940s, with the emergence of polymer materials, ceramics and glass were no longer the preferred insulation materials. European and American countries have started researching polymer insulators. Then, the physical and electrical properties, long-term reliability, and optimal shape of the electrical insulator are studied, and productivity continues to improve.

Among polymer materials that can replace ceramics and glass, silicone rubber has achieved practical results since the 1960s and stands out among several polymers. Silicone rubber insulators have more advantages than ceramic insulators. Firstly, it is lightweight, easy to operate, and safe; In addition, ceramic insulators are often plagued by damage, and an impact can damage them. On the other hand, silicone rubber insulators can withstand mechanical impacts, such as collisions between vehicles and utility poles.

Although other polymer materials also have the above advantages, only silicone rubber will not cause too much pollution to the environment. Polymer insulators can be waterproof, so there will be no leakage or surface arc caused by water droplets falling down. Silicone rubber insulator is a durable material that can be used for a long time in harsh environments because its waterproof performance recovers faster than other polymer insulators.
