Silicone rubber material is an excellent insulating rubber material with characteristics such as ozone resistance and high temperature resistance. But the biggest drawback of this material is its flammability, which requires flame retardants with good performance to overcome this drawback. We analyzed the preparation and properties of flame-retardant silicone rubber in the aviation field, explored the flame retardant effects of several commonly used flame retardants on silicone rubber, in order to improve the flame retardant performance of this material and expand its applicability. On this basis, further explore the current research and prospects of aviation silicone rubber materials.
Due to the special environmental and technical requirements of spacecraft use, high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber is widely used in aerospace products. In the years of research and development work in the engineering department, aerospace materials and process technology have accumulated a large amount of knowledge about high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber formulas and processes. Through demand analysis of applications, the formula and process data of high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber are organized into application cases, material performance indicators, formula rules, process knowledge points, and testing methods.
In order to investigate the effects of different types of vulcanizing agents on the properties of high-temperature resistant and flame-retardant silicone rubber, we applied four types of vulcanizing agents, BIPB, DCBP, BP, and DCP, to rubber production, and compared the properties of flame-retardant silicone rubber such as elongation at break, hardness, tensile strength, and flame retardancy. The research results showed that when the amount of vulcanizing agent in flame-retardant silicone rubber increased, the hardness of the silicone rubber increased, but the elongation at break decreased, while there was no significant change in the oxygen index and tensile strength of the silicone rubber.
After secondary vulcanization, compared to the three vulcanizing agents BIPB, DCBP, and DCP, the use of BP vulcanizing agent resulted in a decrease in the elongation at break and tensile strength of silicone rubber, but its hardness increased, while other vulcanizing agents increased the tensile strength of silicone rubber. In addition, all four types of vulcanizing agents have improved the flame retardancy of silicone rubber to a certain extent, thereby proving that different types of vulcanizing agents have a significant impact on the heat resistance of silicone rubber.
