In China, the existing relevant standards for the determination of alkyl siloxane are shown in the following table. For the determination of polydimethylsiloxane in animal and vegetable oils, the Chinese standard GB5009.254-2016 and the American Petroleum Society (AOCS) standard Cd 24-1995 (2009) were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The standard for the determination of siloxane in silicone rubber in China is GB/T 28112-2011, which uses gas chromatography to determine the content of residual volatile siloxane (D4 ~ D10) in silicone rubber raw rubber.

In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) can also be used to detect siloxane in silicone rubber. However, due to different degrees of hydrolysis of siloxane in aqueous solution, accurate quantitative analysis is challenging.

At present, GC and GC-MS are still the main detection techniques for siloxane.

IQTC has established a GC-MS method for the determination of the content and migration of cyclic oligomers D3, D4, D5 and D6 in food contact materials and products, as well as 21 kinds of siloxanes such as trimethyltriphenylcyclotrisiloxane, tetramethyl tetrphenylcyclotrisiloxane, pentagmethyl pentapphenylcyclopentasiloxane in food mimics. In addition, IQTC also presided over the drafting of the Customs technical specification "Determination of siloxane compounds in silicone Heat-resistant Materials by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry" (2017B061), which has been approved by experts and submitted for approval.
