In March 2003, Tongji University took the lead in creating an energy-saving campus among domestic universities, and constantly innovated and practiced in energy conservation and environmental protection on campus. In May 2002, the United Nations Environment Programme and Tongji University jointly established the "School of environment and sustainable development" in Tongji University, which is committed to building it into an important base for the United Nations Environment Programme to carry out education, scientific research, training and foreign exchange in the Asia Pacific region, especially in developing countries. It is also the only UNEP entity in the world that cooperates with universities.
The international master's program and doctor's program of sustainable development education have been launched one after another.
