What is the difference between silicone sealant and polyurethane sealant?

Application
Silicone glue is a kind of ointment, once exposed to moisture in the air, it will solidify into a tough/elastomeric rubber-like solid material. It is mainly divided into oxime type, titanium alkoxide, amine, acetone, and tin alkoxide. Silicone glue is commonly called glass glue because it is often used for bonding and sealing of glass.

Polyurethane sealant is a sealant with polyurethane rubber and polyurethane prepolymer as the main components. This type of sealant has high tensile strength, excellent elasticity, abrasion resistance, oil resistance and cold resistance, but it has poor water resistance, especially alkali resistance. It can be divided into heating vulcanization type, room temperature vulcanization type and hot melt type. Among them, the room temperature vulcanization type is divided into one-component and two-component. It is widely used in buildings, squares and highways as caulking sealing materials, as well as sealing in automobile manufacturing, glass installation, electronic filling, submarines and rockets.

Curing process
Silicone sealant hardly foams. It is firmly bonded to the bonding material, resistant to humidity and heat and aging. After curing, it effectively resists the effects of tearing and oil stains, and will not be easily contaminated. During the construction process, it is recommended that the adhesive layer should not be too thick, otherwise the curing time will be prolonged. Polyurethane sealant has good strength, good adhesion and tear resistance. It is cured at room temperature, can resist low temperature, and will not freeze and crack in a cold environment. However, air bubbles may appear during the curing process, causing cracks in the adhesive layer. Try to choose high-quality adhesives to ensure a more ideal curing effect.

Choose the best
Every adhesive is not flawless and has small drawbacks. For example, the puncture resistance of silicone sealant is not particularly good, and the price is relatively expensive. The curing speed of polyurethane sealant is a bit slow, and the aging resistance is not very good. The advantages and disadvantages of these two adhesives are different, and the use environment is different. In the purchase process, not only the advantages of the adhesive, but also the disadvantages must be considered. Integrate the advantages and disadvantages together, and see how cost-effective is and what areas it can be used in. If you only consider the advantages and ignore the disadvantages, you may encounter trouble in use. Be prepared to avoid difficult problems.
