Properties of silicone

Hits: 1078 img

The basic structural unit of organic silicone is composed of silicon-oxygen links, and the side chains are connected to various other organic groups through silicon atoms. Therefore, the structure of the silicone coating material contains both "organic groups" and "inorganic structure". This special composition and molecular structure make it combine the characteristics of organic matter and the functions of inorganic matter. The outstanding properties of silicone products include:

1 High temperature resistance
Since the structure of organic silicone has structural characteristics similar to that of inorganic polymers, its bond energy is very high, it has excellent heat resistance. The use temperature of rubber-type silicone is about 250°C, and the resin-type silicone can be used for a long time at 350°C.

2 Low temperature resistance
The rubber-type silicone has long bonds, large bond angles, and is very soft. Its glass transition temperature is generally around -123℃, and can be used for a long time in the range of -5O~250℃. Special products can be used within -100~300℃, such as silicone rubber containing 7.5 (molar content) phenyl group. Still elastic at -112°C.

3 Weather resistance
There are no double bonds in the main chain of silicone, so they are not easily decomposed by ultraviolet light and ozone. Long-term exposure to outdoors or in environments with high ozone concentration will not occur, cracks and viscous creep will not occur, and physical and electrical properties will basically not change. Resin-type silicone will not turn yellow even under strong ultraviolet rays, and its color can remain unchanged for many years.

4 Hydrophobicity
In organic silicone, methyl groups are connected to silicon atoms by bonds, thereby increasing the space for free rotation, and the hydrogen atoms on the methyl group arranged outward repel each other with the hydrogen atoms of water, making it difficult for water molecules to be hydrophilic The oxygen is close to each other, so it has a strong hydrophobicity. Methylhydropolysiloxane or polyethylhydropolysiloxane containing Si-H bonds has reactive activity and strong orientation. It can be cross-linked into a hydrophobic film by catalyst action at low temperatures.

5 Breathability
Since the polysiloxane molecules have a spiral structure and large free space, the silicone rubber-type coating film has good gas and vapor permeability, such as permeability of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases in the air at room temperature. The rate is 30 to 50 times higher than that of natural rubber and is selective. Therefore, it has been widely used in the separation membrane of gas and water vapor, artificial heart and lung machines, oxygen-enriching devices, etc.

6 Low surface tension and low surface energy
The main chain of silicone is very flexible, and its intermolecular action is much weaker than that of hydrocarbons. Therefore, it has lower viscosity than hydrocarbons of the same molecular weight, weaker surface tension, small surface energy, and strong film formation ability. This low surface tension and low surface energy are the main reasons for its application in many aspects: hydrophobicity, defoaming, foam stability, anti-stickness, lubrication, and polishing.

7 Electrical insulation performance
Silicone products all have good electrical insulation performance, and their dielectric loss, voltage resistance, arc resistance, corona resistance, volume resistance and surface resistance coefficient are among the best in insulating materials, and their electrical properties are subject to temperature and frequency. The impact is very small. Therefore, they are a stable electrical insulating material and are widely used in the electronic and electrical industries. In addition to excellent heat resistance, silicone also has excellent water repellency, which is a guarantee for high reliability of electrical equipment when used in wet conditions.

8 Physiological inertia (non-toxic)
Silicone elastomers are correctly selected for reliable cross-linking and catalytic systems. The products after full cross-linking are non-toxic and harmless, and can be used in the food and medical industries.
