Silicones in coatings

Hits: 1017 img

The application technology of silicones in coatings, including inks, has evolved from specialized, high-performance coatings to a wider range of fields. The application of silicone technology can improve the insulation, heat resistance, weather resistance, stain resistance, abrasion resistance, and other properties of coatings, and the following is described according to their applications.

1. Insulating material
The first application technology of silicone as a coating was silicone-impregnated fiberglass cloth tape, which served as a protective layer for wire insulation on U.S. Navy submarines. In the 50s of the 20th century, China developed silicone resin, which was also mainly used for the insulation impregnation of H-class motor coils, the impregnation of fiberglass cloth for wire jacketing and slot insulation of H-class motors, the impregnation of glass fiber insulating sleeves, mica tape for insulation, etc.

Therefore, pure silicone resin as an insulating coating is the oldest silicone product. The pure silicone resin produced by the old process has the advantages of high temperature resistance, weather resistance, good insulation and other general organic resins, but it also has the disadvantages of high curing temperature, long curing time, poor adhesion, and back-adhesion at high temperature. With the development of science and technology and the development of new materials, silicone is not the only H-class insulating coating, but also high-performance organic resin H-class insulating paints such as polyimide and polyester.

Therefore, in order to meet the needs of the situation, silicone coatings must develop in the direction of new processes, new technologies, new varieties and new uses. Through the reform of the silicone resin production process and the use of organic resins and silicone resins cold spelling or copolymerization modification and other new technologies, the three defects of silicone resin have been greatly improved, and the application field of silicone coatings has also been expanded.

2. Primer
The adhesion forces between the coating and the substrate include mechanical adhesion, chemical bonding, diffusion and dipole force. The amount of adhesion directly affects the adhesion of the coating.

The main methods to improve the adhesion between the coating and the substrate are: substrate grinding, sandblasting, reducing the construction viscosity of the coating, increasing the construction temperature, and improving the wettability of the substrate (using solvent wiping, corona, flame burning, oxidant treatment, etc.), and the organosilicon is related to the use of adhesion promoter, that is, the use of primer, and the silicone material used for primer is mainly silane. Alkoxysilanes can improve the adhesion, flowability, leveling, abrasion resistance, dispersion of pigments and fillers, water resistance and salt spray resistance of coatings and substrates, and have been widely used in primer formulations of various metal and silicone-containing materials.
