Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is an elastic material that undergoes vulcanization crosslinking in the atmosphere or heated state with a small amount of water as the initiator or platinum as the catalyst. It can be divided into single component and two-component (multi-component) types according to packaging form, and can be classified into condensation type or addition type liquid silicone rubber according to reaction type. Liquid silicone rubber does not contain any stabilizers, plasticizers, or accelerators. As a crosslinking material, it can withstand very high temperatures without thermal aging and maintain its mechanical properties and elasticity. By changing certain side groups on it, the material can be modified to meet specific functions or requirements. LSR has excellent chemical stability, oil resistance, and weather resistance, and can remain stable in the temperature range of 50 ℃ to 180 ℃. After adding stabilizers, it can remain stable at temperatures above 250 ℃ and has low-temperature flexibility at -60 ℃. LSR is usually transparent, and other pigments can be added as needed. It is very easy to color and is widely used in electronic component sealing, pipeline sealing, medical devices, keyboards, and baby related products. The application of liquid silicone rubber in fields such as 3D printing, waterproofing, coating, food contact silicone, and wearable components has great potential for development. Of course, in the automotive industry, comprehensive coverage has also been achieved, such as connectors, electric vehicle battery seals, engine gaskets, headlight seals, and shock absorbers, which have become the preferred materials for providing sealing, insulation, and protection solutions for internal applications.
The rapidly changing technological trends in the electric vehicle manufacturing industry are prompting silicone manufacturers to adopt innovative methods to produce customized products. The solution of liquid silicone rubber in new energy vehicles mainly has four applications: sealing and waterproofing, safety protection, structural thermal conductivity, and lightweight. Liquid silicone rubber elastomers are the most prominent product segment in the electric vehicle market, and their growth can be attributed to their widespread applications, such as seals, casings, and gaskets, used for insulation of various components, such as connector seals, heat sinks, etc., forming insulation covers around battery packs to protect battery cells from overheating or undercooling. In addition, customized design can provide insulation or aid in heat dissipation to ensure optimal operating temperature. In order to adapt to harsh spaces, silicone is designed to withstand severe vibrations. Short circuit and overcurrent are the main causes of battery failure in electric vehicles. The dielectric properties of silicone rubber can protect and isolate key components, protecting the battery and busbar from the hazards of surges and helping to prevent battery fires.
