Classification and application of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives

Hits: 242 img

Do you know the use classification of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives? Organosilicon pressure sensitive adhesives have good adhesive strength and initial adhesion of general pressure sensitive adhesives. Although they have a small market share, they are an irreplaceable adhesive in many special applications. Do you know the use classification of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives?

There are four main types of silicone pressure sensitive adhesive, including solvent type, high solid content type, solvent-free type, hot-melt type and lotion type silicone pressure sensitive adhesive.
1. Solvent based silicone pressure sensitive adhesive
Solvent based silicone pressure sensitive adhesives are the most developed and can meet many practical needs with excellent performance. The solvents used are toluene, xylene, and petroleum ether. Although solvent-based silicone pressure sensitive adhesives have excellent performance, their low solid content requires the use of a large amount of solvents, consumes a large amount of raw materials and energy, and causes environmental pollution, which limits their further development.
2. High solid content and solvent-free silicone pressure sensitive adhesives
In order to meet environmental requirements and reduce the use and emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pollute the air, high solid content and solvent-free silicone pressure sensitive adhesives have gradually developed. The significant advantages of high solid content systems are that they require only a small amount or no solvent dilution, have broad performance, are easy to deploy, and have simple requirements for production equipment. They can also be well coated and cured on traditional low solid content adhesive coating machines, and are convenient for processing and storage.
3. Hot melt silicone pressure sensitive adhesive
The advantages of hot-melt silicone pressure sensitive adhesives are: no use of organic solvents, safety and environmental protection, convenient construction, and the use of traditional equipment for coating, low cost, and no pollution.
4. Lotion silicone pressure sensitive adhesive
There are few reports on pure lotion silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive, because organic surfactant needs to be added when preparing silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive lotion, which will have adverse effects on many properties of pressure-sensitive adhesive.

The application of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives is mainly in the following two aspects:
1. Industrial applications
Organosilicon pressure sensitive adhesive tapes are widely used in industrial production in the form of splicing tapes, electrical tapes, plasma spraying tapes, and machining tapes due to their excellent resistance to high and low temperatures, chemical resistance, and low dielectric properties, and their ability to adhere to low surface energy surfaces. Many substrate surfaces are difficult to adhere to, such as polyester, polyimide, and polytetrafluoroethylene. Before applying pressure sensitive adhesives, it is necessary to treat the substrate surface through chemical, electrical, or plasma methods or apply a layer of primer on the substrate surface to make the silicone pressure sensitive adhesive adhere to the substrate more firmly.
2. Applications in electronics
In electronics, silicone pressure sensitive adhesives and adhesive tapes are commonly used in the production and assembly process of printed circuit boards (PCBs). This requires that pressure sensitive adhesives not only be able to withstand high temperatures (270 ℃ for a short time), adhere to wet, low surface energy interfaces, but also have low dielectric properties. Organosilicon pressure sensitive adhesives are also widely used in protective coatings for electronic components. These protective coatings consist of multiple layers of structure, each layer giving unique properties to the protective coating.
