The surface of silica has strong chemical adsorption activity, which is related to the surface hydroxyl groups. It can combine with water in the form of hydrogen bonds to form a multi-molecular adsorption layer. In addition, it can also adsorb with many organic small molecular substances.
The adsorption of multifunctional amines or alcohols is higher than that of monofunctional ones, so multifunctional compounds such as ethanolamine, ethylene glycol, and triethanolamine are commonly used as activators in SiO2 compounds.
