The function of cyclic polydimethylsiloxane

Cyclic polydimethylsiloxane has a variety of uses, such as conditioner, solvent, moisturizer, carrier and viscosity control agent. As with other silicone oils, this component has a unique fluidity and is easily pushed out. When applied to skin and hair, it gives the skin and hair a silky feel and creates a waterproof protective film on the surface of the skin. It fills in fine lines/wrinkles, giving the face a temporarily firm, full look.

It is often used as a carrier for other ingredients in products because its molecules are too large to penetrate the skin completely and have no meaningful moisturizing properties. Its main use is to quickly deliver nutrients to the skin and hair, and it evaporates easily into the air. It can also be used as a basic solvent of flavor and fragrance oil and antistatic agent. It is most commonly used as a conditioner because it gives hair a silky feel and reduces greasy residue. We find it in many cosmetics, such as facial moisturizers/lotions, foundations, shampoos/conditioners, body sprays, sunblocks, anti-aging serums, antiperspirants/deodorants, concealers, hair dyes and eye creams.

Safety/Side effects

Although silicones like cyclic dimethylsiloxane have no adverse side effects in humans, there are many concerns that they are harmful to the environment (for example, to Marine life). As a result, many countries, such as Canada, have asked the silicone industry to provide more information and scientific data to prove their safety. It is worth mentioning that silicone can stick to sebum, dirt and bacteria on the epidermis, which can cause allergic reactions and breakouts.
