Cyclopentamyldimethylsiloxane (D5) is used in cosmetics mainly as an emollient and skin/hair conditioner due to its good skin feeling, conditioning and volatile properties.

I. Safety evaluation of D5

EWG (Environmental Working Group) :

EWG rated D5's ingredients 3. Based on published literature or regulations worldwide, the following safety tips are provided:

1. Durable and biocumulative for wildlife
2. Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) : substances classified as toxic or harmful
3. Tumors: Tumor formation has been observed at moderate doses in one or more animal studies
4. Endocrine disruption: One or more animal studies have shown that endocrine disruption is observed at moderate doses
5. Neurotoxicity: One or more animal studies have shown an effect at moderate doses
6. Ecotoxicity: Suspected environmental toxins, persistent or biocumulative

CIR (Evaluation of cosmetic ingredients) :

CIR considers cyclodimethylsiloxane (D4, D5, D6, D7) to be safe in its current form and concentration.

Based on the above assessment opinions:

Both CIR and SCCS consider D5 to be safe for humans at existing concentrations used in cosmetics. The SCCS's safety findings do not include products such as hair styling aerosols, sunscreen sprays and oral care.

It has been suggested that SCCS restrict the use of D5 in personal care based on its possible adverse impact on the environment. The current restriction is that the content of D4 and D5 must be less than 0.1% in washing cosmetics.
