In 1912, Mottee, an Englishman, discovered the reinforcing effect of carbon black on rubber, especially after significantly improving the wear resistance of tires. Since then, the demand for carbon black has grown rapidly and it has gradually become an indispensable raw material for the rubber industry.

During the First World War, due to the shortage of energy materials for carbon black production, Germany began to use white silica produced by precipitation method to replace carbon black, while white amorphous silica was named White Carbon Black because of its similar physical properties and uses with carbon black. Later, due to the rapid development of automobile and its transportation industry, the rising price of raw materials for carbon black production and the requirements for energy conservation and emission reduction, white carbon black has become a leader in reinforcing materials in the rubber industry. At present, white carbon black used in colored rubber products can completely replace carbon black for reinforcement to meet the needs of white or translucent products.

Today, the white carbon black we are talking about is not simply a substitute for carbon black in rubber formula, but a general term for a white ultrafine powder of X-ray amorphous silicic acid and silicate. This kind of powder material has very wide applications. According to different preparation routes, it is mainly divided into two categories: precipitated white carbon black and vapor phase white carbon black.
