How to choose building sealant correctly?

Building curtain wall usually consists of panel and supporting structure of curtain wall. In the curtain wall design of buildings with various curtain walls as external enclosure, silicone structural sealant must be used for flexible connection according to JGJ 102-2003 technical code for glass curtain wall engineering. The silicone structural sealant on this part must meet the national compulsory standard GB 16776-2005 silicone structural sealant for building, which needs to bear a variety of loads and ensure the long-term adhesion to the curtain wall panel, so as to avoid the risk of falling off of the curtain wall panel due to the problem of structural adhesive. Therefore, silicone structural sealant itself needs high strength, good toughness, which can ensure good mechanical properties and meet the requirements of design service life under the harsh conditions of high and low temperature, immersion and UV irradiation.

The joints between curtain wall panels need silicone sealant for sealing. This type of sealant is called silicone weather resistant sealant. Although the weatherproof sealant for joint sealing does not need to bear all kinds of loads of curtain wall panel, it needs to bear the displacement caused by the deformation of the base material caused by the thermal expansion and cold contraction of the wind load with the change of temperature. It not only needs the sealant to have certain mechanical properties and bonding properties, but also needs the weatherproof sealant to have better displacement capacity. Silicone weatherproof sealant shall be classified into 20hm / LM, 25hm / LM, 35hm / LM and 50hm / LM according to GB / T 14683-2017 silicone and modified silicone building sealant. It is recommended to use class 35 products for joint sealing of common glass curtain wall and aluminum plate curtain wall. In addition to the conventional types of curtain wall panels, stone special sealant is required for stone curtain wall panels to prevent curtain wall pollution; due to its special requirements, special sealant is required for daylighting roof joint sealing.

Generally speaking, the following points should be considered in the selection of the second sealant for hollow glass: (1) the sealing performance of the edge; (2) the protection provided for the whole glass system; (3) the environment exposed by the second sealant during the use. Silicone structural sealant is generally preferred for commercial building glass (glass curtain wall, structural glass, etc.), and silicone sealant or other types of sealant can be used for the sealing of hollow glass of doors and windows.
