On April 6, 2020, Frontiers in plant science online published a research paper entitled "osmfs1 / oshop2 complex participants in rice male and female development" by Wan Jianmin, academician of Nanjing Agricultural University, and Zhao Zhigang, Professor, as corresponding author.
Meiosis plays an important role in the generation of gametes and genetic diversity of offspring. Normal DSB repair is very important for homologous recombination (HR) and DNA fragment exchange, but the molecular mechanism is still unclear. In this study, a completely sterile rice osmfs1 (male and female sterility 1) mutant was characterized. Due to severe chromosome defects, both pollen and embryo sac were sterile in the reproductive stage. Map based cloning revealed that osmfs1 encodes a meiotic curly coil protein responsible for DSB repair and is an important cofactor in promoting single strand invasion. Expression pattern analysis showed that osmfs1 was preferentially expressed in meiosis. The subcellular localization analysis of osmfs1 showed that it was only related to the nucleus. In addition, yeast two hybrid (Y2H) and pull-down results showed that there was a direct interaction between osmfs1 and oshop2 protein to form a stable complex, so as to ensure accurate homologous recombination.
The results showed that osmfs1 was indispensable for the normal development of Rice Anther and embryo sac.
